True liberty and sustained prosperity emerge in a narrow corridor where state capacity and societal mobilization remain in dynamic balance. If the state overpowers society, despotism crushes freedom and stifles long-term innovation. If society overpowers the state, lawlessness or rigid cultural norms trap individuals in violence and stagnation. Maintaining this corridor requires a continuous, mutually reinforcing competition between the two forces.
