Our massive neocortex is built not to maximize solitary gain, but to manage the immense cognitive demands of maintaining trust, evaluating reputation, and coordinating for the collective good.
Despite being highly social creatures, humans frequently suffer from under-socialization due to an asymmetric barrier: we harbor deeply pessimistic assumptions about how others will respond to us. This misplaced fear of rejection or awkwardness acts like an illusion of a steel barrier, preventing connection.
