Around 12,000 years ago, humans transitioned from foraging to farming in what is widely perceived as a massive leap forward. In reality, the Agricultural Revolution was a profound trap that sacrificed individual well being for the evolutionary success of the species. Cultivating wheat allowed human populations to multiply exponentially, but it forced individuals into a life of backbreaking labor, vulnerable to drought, famine, and new infectious diseases contracted from domesticated animals.
The transition occurred through tiny, irreversible steps as luxuries of settled life gradually became necessities. By the time humans realized their diets had become narrower and their labor harder, their swollen populations made returning to foraging impossible. This era also initiated the systemic exploitation of domesticated animals, manipulating their reproduction and bodily autonomy on a massive scale to extract labor, meat, and milk.
To coordinate the exploding populations brought on by agriculture, humans embedded their shared fictions into institutional structures known as imagined orders. Whether organized around the Code of Hammurabi or the American Declaration of Independence, these systems enforce massive cooperation by dividing people into hierarchies and claiming that these divisions reflect universal, indisputable laws of nature or divine will.
These hierarchies, which dictate gender roles, caste systems, and class divisions, lack any objective biological basis. They are inter-subjective realities, meaning they exist in the shared communication network of millions of minds. Because they are interwoven into the material world and shape human desires from birth, imagined orders are almost impossible to dismantle without replacing them with a new, equally compelling myth.
As kingdoms expanded, the human brain proved inadequate for managing the massive amounts of mathematical data required to sustain an empire. The invention of writing and numbers solved this biological limitation, allowing rulers to track taxes, properties, and debts across vast populations.
This development fundamentally altered human thought. To organize written records, ancient societies had to invent systems of archiving and cataloging, which forced human thinking to shift from a holistic, free associating style to one characterized by compartmentalization and bureaucracy. Data processing became the invisible scaffolding that held large scale political entities together.
The unification of humankind was heavily driven by the invention of money, a purely mental construct that revolutionized trade. Barter systems fail in large, complex societies because they require a double coincidence of wants. Money bypassed this limitation by serving as a universal medium of exchange and a reliable store of wealth, allowing strangers from entirely different cultures to cooperate.
Crucially, money is the most universal and efficient system of mutual trust ever created. People accept coins or digital data not because they inherently value the object, but because they trust that everyone else will accept it. This shared belief allowed markets to bridge vast geographical and cultural divides, pulling disparate human groups into a single, interconnected economic sphere.
Empires have been the most common form of political organization for millennia and acted as massive engines for human unification. By ruling over distinct peoples and operating with flexible borders, empires absorbed diverse cultures into a single political umbrella.
Although often built on violence and oppression, empires fostered cultural homogenization by spreading standardized languages, laws, and infrastructure. Imperialists frequently justified their conquests with a belief that they were bringing a superior, universally beneficial culture to the conquered. Over centuries, these imperial cultures assimilated the subject peoples, permanently reducing human diversity and creating the large, complex societies that define the modern geopolitical landscape.
Religion functions as a unifying force by asserting that human laws are subordinate to an absolute, superhuman order. Early human societies practiced animism, viewing all entities as equal participants in a localized spiritual ecosystem. As societies expanded into empires and trade networks, humans adopted polytheism, and eventually universal, missionary monotheism, which demanded global conversion and centralized moral authority.
In the modern era, traditional belief in gods has been largely supplanted by natural law religions, such as liberalism, capitalism, and socialism. The most dominant of these is humanism, which places Homo sapiens at the center of the moral universe. Like ancient faiths, humanism relies on the unquestioned belief in an invisible, sacred quality within human beings to maintain social stability and dictate individual rights.
Roughly 500 years ago, a monumental shift in human thought occurred when European societies institutionalized the admission of ignorance. Prior to this, religious and philosophical traditions assumed that all important knowledge had already been revealed. The Scientific Revolution broke this mold by acknowledging that humanity did not know the answers to its most vital questions, promoting observation and mathematics as tools to acquire new powers.
This empirical pursuit was not conducted in a vacuum, it was heavily funded by empires and capitalists seeking technological advantages, military supremacy, and new markets. The marriage of science and imperialism meant that European conquerors explored the globe not merely to spread their existing worldview, but to relentlessly gather new knowledge and harness it for economic and political dominance.
Capitalism revolutionized human progress through the invention of credit, a financial mechanism built entirely on trust in a better future. For most of history, economic growth was stagnant because capital was limited to existing physical resources. Credit allowed people to borrow against future production, unleashing massive waves of investment into new enterprises and scientific research.
The core ethic of capitalism dictates that profits must be continually reinvested to increase production rather than hoarded or spent on idle luxuries. This feedback loop of investment, technological innovation, and expanding markets fueled the Industrial Revolution, enabling humans to convert unprecedented amounts of heat and fossil fuels into mechanical energy and raw material wealth.
The Industrial Revolution systematically dismantled the tight knit family and community networks that had sustained humans for thousands of years. Historically, the family served as the sole provider of welfare, health care, and security. As the market and the state grew in power, they offered individuals an alternative, promising personal freedom and economic independence from local elders.
Consequently, humans were transformed from interdependent community members into isolated individuals interacting primarily as laborers and consumers. To fill the emotional void left by the collapse of intimate local communities, the state and the market cultivated imagined communities, such as intense nationalism and consumer tribes, binding strangers together through shared political ideologies or brand loyalties.
Despite unprecedented wealth and technological power, there is little evidence that humans are significantly happier than their foraging ancestors. Happiness is heavily determined by the gap between objective conditions and subjective expectations, which continually inflate alongside technological progress. Furthermore, biology regulates subjective well being through a relatively stable biochemical baseline, meaning material comforts rarely produce lasting psychological shifts.
Now, humans stand on the precipice of ending their own history as a biologically evolved species. Through biological engineering, cyborg technology, and artificial intelligence, humanity is abandoning the slow, undirected laws of natural selection in favor of intelligent design. As humanity approaches the ability to engineer not just bodies, but consciousness and desire itself, it faces an existential void, wielding godlike power without a clear understanding of what it actually wants to become.
